Every student shall undergo a phase of skilled study extending over 4 ½ academic years from the date of initiation of his  study for the subject comprising the medical curriculum to the date of completion of the examination followed by one year  compulsory rotating internship.  The 4 ½ years course has been divided into three phases.
Phase I 1 year, consisting of two terms of 6 months each.
Phase II 1 ½ years, consisting of three terms of 6 months each.
Phase III 2 years, after phase II, consisting of four terms of 6 months each.
After passing pre-clinical subjects in phase I, Phase II (3 terms —1 ½ years), dealing with Para clinical subjects.  Para Clinical subjects shall consist of pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine including Toxicology and part of community medicine.  During this phase the clinical subjects shall be taught concurrently.  The clinical subjects taught will be obstetrics and Gynecology,   Medicine, Surgery and their allied specifications respectively.

The College is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka and is recognised by the Medical Council of india. The M.B.B.S Course is governed by the regulations of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka. The duration of the course is four and half years (9 terms, each of 6 month duration) of academic Study and one year of internship.

Under these regulations, the entire course is divided into 3 phases. Candidates are admitted to the Pre-Clinical Phase(Phase-I) of one year duration (2 terms) during which they study the subjects of Anatomy, Physiology & Biochemistry. At the end of Phase-1, they appear for the M.B.B.S Phase-I examination of the University. After fruitfully implementation the Pre-Clinical course, the students enter the Para-Clinical Phase (Phase-II) of one & a half year duration(3 terms), during which they primarily revise Microbiology, Pharmacology, Pathology & Forensic Medicine. During this period, the students also learn some part of the clinical subjects. They appear for the Phase-II university examinations at the end of the one and a half years. If successful, the students enter Phase-III which is of two years duration having quantifiable subjects as part of the study. At the end of one year (2 terms), the student take the Phase-III(Part-1) examinations comprising of the subjects E.N.T, Ophthalmology & Community Medicine. At the end of the next one year (the last 2 terms), the student answers the Phase-III (Part-2) examinations comprising of the subjects Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics & Orthopaedics.

Clinical training in the Hospitals attached to the Institute will commence as soon as the student successfully completes Phase-I & will continue throughout Phase-II & Phase-III of the course

Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore was established in 1955, utilizing the medical amenities of the Government Wenlock Hospital and Government Lady Goschen Hospital. In 1961, the pre-clinical section was started in Mangalore.

The Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore became an self-regulating unit in 1977. Apart from the two Government hospitals, there is a schooling hospital attached to the College viz., the KMC Hospital, Attavar, established in 1992 with a bed strength of 500.The infrastructural services are equivalent to international standards with seven big air-conditioned lecture halls fitted with modern audio-visual teaching aids including multi-media projectors and a modern, fully air-conditioned library with a seating capacity of about 500, and with internet facility. Father Muller Homoeopathic medical College is unit of the pioneering Father Muller Charitable Institutions, (FMCI) founded by Rev Fr Augustus Muller, a German Jesuit missionary. Fr Muller was the grandson of Mr. Augustus Muller who was the school teacher of Dr Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of Homoeopathy. No wonder Fr Muller fell in love with Homoeopathy and popularized it in Mangalore and other parts of the country. Father Muller Charitable Institutions had its humble establishment in the Kankanady Hill as a small dispensary in 1880, called the Homoeopathic Poor Dispensary. Father Muller was the first Indian Repertorian and also has authored many Homoeopathic books.

The tiny acorn of the FMCI has grown into mighty oak tree of one of the premier medical institutions of the nation and its hallowed portals a much sort after medical training and education nursing care and teaching experience

In the year 1980, FMCI celebrated its centenary and to commemorate this event a decision was taken to institute a Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital at Kankanady.
