Founded in 1888, Shikshana Prasaraka Mandali is one of the pioneers of educational societies in Maharashtra. It believes in building not just an institution but a knowledge centre – Shikshana Prasaraka Mandali. The institution since its inception is determined to building an environment that encourages the spirit of free thinking, thus imparting quality education to more than 45,000 students. S.P. Mandali owns educational institutions including pre-primary, primary, secondary and higher secondary schools, colleges for Arts, Science and Commerce, a school for hearing impaired children, a therapeutic drug monitoring laboratory, an institute carrying out research in Ayurvedic and Herbal Medicine and management institutes.

The Mandali is registered both under The Societies Registration Act, 1860 and The Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950. S.P.Mandali  had the fortune of receiving the blessings of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

Fergusson College is an Autonomous public educational institution offering courses in the streams of Arts and Science in the city of Pune. It was founded in 1885 by the Deccan Education Society. Professor Vaman Shivram Apte was its first principal.

The founders of the DES and of the Fergusson College, were more than convinced, of the need for the spread of western knowledge, as an urgent need of Indian Society, to bring about social reforms and as a potent instrument for national regeneration.

The emphasis of the founders on ‘knowledge’, is aptly reflected in the college emblem, which bears the inscription, ‘Knowledge is Power’. The ‘Garuda’ (the Eagle) in this emblem, symbolises the youth, soaring with the power of knowledge, into a vast sky of challenges and opportunities.

In the year 1880 the late Shri V. K. Chiplunkar with Lokmanya Tilak and M. B. Namjoshi started ‘New English School’ in Pune with the objective of ‘cheapening and facilitating education’. In course of time Shri V. S. Apte, (M.A.), Shri. G. G. Agarkar, (M.A.), Shri V. B. Kelkar, (B.A.), Shri M. S. Gole, (M. A.), and Shri. N. K. Dharap, (B. A.) joined them.

This was a revolutionary step because Government Institutions and Christian missionaries were the only agencies involved in educating the masses and the education provided failed to generate leadership for industrial regeneration of a self-governing nation. Private enterprises in education were discouraged. With the idea of providing education to rouse the intellect, drooping will and slumbering conscience of the fallen countrymen, Deccan Education Society came into existence.

To incorporate a regular constitution on a new and more extended basis, these pioneers of innovative education called a meeting of the sympathisers with private education on the 24th October, 1884, and at that meeting the Deccan Education Society was formed and the New English School, (Tilak Road, Pune), placed under its management. On the 13th August 1885 the Society was registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. Since that time several institutions have been created and have been placed under the management of the Society.To fulfil the set objectives, DES established various educational institutions in Western Maharashtra. These educational institutions include not only schools and colleges, but also technical institutes and autonomous institutes in the field of management, law, agricultural education and vocational training. With a view to impart basic education, DES has started many schools at various places. The DES management believes in ‘Union is strength’. So guided and aided by educationists, visionaries, philanthropists and ex-students, the Society is endeavouring to mould and expand educational activities.

CHRIST (Deemed to be University) was born out of the educational vision of St Kuriakose Elias Chavara, an educationalist and social reformer of the nineteenth century in South India. He founded the first Catholic indigenous congregation, Caramelises of Mary Immaculate (CMI), in 1831 which administers CHRIST (Deemed to be University).

Established in 1969 as Christ College, it undertook path-breaking initiatives in Indian higher education with the introduction of innovative and modern curricula, insistence on academic discipline, imparting of Holistic Education and adoption of global higher education practices with the support of creative and dedicated staff. The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India conferred Autonomy to Christ College in 2004 and identified it as an Institution with Potential for Excellence in 2006. In 2008 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India, declared the institution a Deemed to be University, in the name and style of Christ University. One of the first institutions in India to be accredited in 1998 by the NAAC, and subsequently in 2004 and 2016, CHRIST (Deemed to be University) has the top grade ‘A’ in the 4-point scale.
